Inheriting a music catalog can be both meaningful and confusing. You may be responsible for rights you know little about, spread across contracts, collecting societies and platforms. This guide covers the first steps.
Step 1: Find out what the estate owns
Make an inventory of:
- Songs written by the artist (publishing rights).
- Recordings owned by the artist (masters) or royalties from record contracts.
- Contracts with publishers, labels, distributors and administrators.
- Memberships in collecting societies.
Recent statements are often the fastest way to build this list, because they show who is paying and for what.
Step 2: Update registrations and payments
Collecting societies, publishers and labels need proof of inheritance to redirect payments to the heirs. Until this is done, royalties may be held or lost. Ask each payer what documents they require.
Step 3: Agree among heirs
If there are several heirs, decisions about licensing or selling usually need agreement. Setting up a simple structure or a single representative makes the estate much easier to manage and more attractive to buyers.
Step 4: Protect and grow the value
Estates can increase income by fixing metadata, claiming unpaid royalties, pitching songs for sync and marketing anniversaries. Many recent deals, such as those between estates and specialist buyers, combine catalog rights with name, image and likeness to fund documentaries, reissues and merchandise.
Step 5: Keep, license or sell?
- Keep if the estate wants long-term income and is able to manage it.
- License or partner if you want expertise without selling everything.
- Sell all or part if the heirs need liquidity or prefer simplicity.
