Distributor Advances in 2026: TuneCore, Amuse, UnitedMasters and the Alternatives

By Andrés Pesqueira López, Co-Founder

How automated distributor advances work, what TuneCore, Amuse and UnitedMasters publish, the hidden costs and when another structure fits better.

A distributor advance is upfront money your distributor, or a funder it partners with, pays against the streaming royalties it expects to collect for you. In 2026 many distributors offer them, often in a few clicks. They are fast and usually small, and while they are active you are tied to that distributor. If you own an established back catalog, a fixed-term licence advance or a specialist royalty advance may pay more and leave you more freedom.

Key takeaways

  • TuneCore, Amuse, UnitedMasters and several other distributors offer advances on streaming royalties in 2026.
  • They are fast and usually sized on recent streams through that platform only.
  • While the advance is active you are usually tied to that distributor, and some programs take control of your account.
  • Owners of an established back catalog can often get more, with more freedom, from a fixed-term licence advance or a specialist royalty advance.

Why do distributors offer advances?

Distributors already see your streaming data, so they can size an advance quickly and recover it from royalties that pass through their own system. For the distributor, an advance also keeps you on the platform: you cannot easily move your catalog while the balance is open. That is why automated advances have spread from a few specialists to most of the market.

Which distributors offer advances in 2026?

The table below covers what each company states publicly. Terms change often and most do not publish fees, so check the current terms with each provider before applying.

Program What is published What to check before signing
TuneCore Direct Advance, powered by RoyFi Approval is based on your sales history and projected sales, not a credit check. You upload two years of earnings data. RoyFi must be given control of your TuneCore account while the advance is active, and you cannot take releases down in that time. The fee, how much of your income is withheld and for how long
Amuse Fast Forward Offers are calculated from the streaming data of music distributed through Amuse and paid in the app. Amuse says it has made more than 50,000 advances since 2019, from small amounts up to tens of thousands of dollars, with funds in about two business days. The fee on each advance and how repayment works if streams fall
UnitedMasters (with beatBread) In 2021 it announced advances from $1,000 up to $1 million for qualifying artists, sized from streaming and social data. The term, the share of income committed and what happens at the end
Others AWAL, ONErpm, Stem, Too Lost, Horus Music and Venice Music are reported to offer advances or funding to eligible artists. Their terms are not published in detail: ask for them in writing

How do distributor advances work?

  • They are sized on recent streams. Most offers use the last months or years of streaming income on that platform, so a catalog spread across several distributors may get a smaller number than it deserves.
  • They are recovered from your royalties at source. The distributor keeps all or part of your income until the advance and its fee are covered.
  • They tie you to the platform. You usually cannot move your catalog, and sometimes cannot take releases down, until the advance is recouped.
  • The cost is a fee, not interest. A flat fee on a short advance can be expensive in annual terms. Compare the total you give up with the money you receive.

Is a distributor advance worth it?

It can be, in the right situation:

  • You need a modest amount quickly, for example to fund a release or a tour.
  • Your catalog is young and most of your income comes through one distributor.
  • You are happy to stay with that distributor for the period of the advance.

It is usually not the best deal if your catalog is established, earns through several channels or you want to keep the freedom to move.

What are the alternatives to a distributor advance?

Your situation Often a better fit Why
You own masters with releases older than two or three years and steady income Distribution licence advance for 5 to 25 years The amount reflects the whole catalog and the term you choose, and the rights return to you at the end
You earn from several sources, such as songwriter royalties, neighbouring rights or several distributors Royalty advance from a specialist funder It can be sized on all your verified income, not one platform
You are signed to a label and still unrecouped Unrecouped buyout A distributor advance cannot touch income your label is still recouping
You want the largest possible amount and do not need to keep the rights A full or partial sale A sale is priced as a multiple of annual income, not a fraction of it

How to compare two advance offers

Ask every provider the same questions and put the answers side by side:

  1. Net amount: what reaches your bank account after fees and deductions?
  2. Income withheld: what share of your royalties goes to repayment, and do you keep any part during recoupment?
  3. Term: how long does it last, and does it extend if income falls?
  4. Control: can you move distributor, change release plans or take releases down while it is active?
  5. Scope: does it cover only existing releases, or also new music?
  6. Recourse: is it recovered only from royalties, or repayable like a loan if they fall short?
  7. Exit: can you pay off the balance early, and at what cost?

Frequently asked questions

Is a distributor advance worth it?

It can be worth it if you need a modest amount quickly and plan to stay with that distributor. Compare the fee and the share of income withheld with what you receive, and compare the offer with a licence or royalty advance before accepting.

Do I keep my masters with a distributor advance?

Usually yes. A distributor advance is recovered from your royalties and does not normally transfer ownership. But you may give up control of your account or the right to move your catalog until it is recouped, so read those clauses.

Is a distributor advance a loan?

Most are presented as advances recovered only from royalties. Some agreements still let the provider keep collecting, extend the term or recover a shortfall in other ways. Check the recourse clause before signing.

Can I have a distributor advance and another advance at the same time?

Only on different income. Royalties already committed to one advance cannot normally be committed again. Songwriter royalties or recordings distributed elsewhere may still support a separate advance.

How much more can a licence advance pay?

It depends on the catalog and the term. A licence advance is sized on the whole catalog's income for a fixed period of years, so for established catalogs it is often a different order of size than an automated distributor offer. Try the advance mode of our calculator for an indicative figure.
